ENDA is NOT equal.
A statement from Queer Nation.
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is NOT equal and the LGBT community needs and deserves the legal protections that are extended to ALL Americans.
ENDA does NOT offer comprehensive protection.
ENDA does NOT ban discrimination in housing.
ENDA does NOT ban discrimination in public accommodations.
ENDA does NOT ban discrimination in education.
ENDA does NOT ban discrimination in federal programs.
If you experience discrimination in housing, in education, in federal programs, or in public accommodations (such as a bakery, photography studio, a hotel or a restaurant), ENDA will NOT protect you.
ENDA DOES enshrine legal discrimination under federal law:
ENDA DOES allow some employers, such as religiously-affiliated hospitals, colleges, and charities, to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
ENDA will NOT protect you from discrimination by any religiously-affiliated employers.
Including gender identity and sexual orientation in comprehensive civil rights legislation, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, WILL protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from ALL forms of discrimination.
Contact your member of Congress at house.gov and demand that the Federal Government enact comprehensive civil rights legislation that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes, NOT piecemeal stopgap legislation.
