A Precious Moment
As marriage wins sweep America, we had a different Precious Moment on May 14 when Cathy Marino-Thomas, the former board chair of Marriage Equality USA, called for the LGBT community to pursue comprehensive federal civil rights legislation and reject the Employment Non-Discrimination ACT (ENDA), which only bars employment discrimination and has a religious exemption that would allow religiously-affiliated employers to discriminate against LGBT people.
“Beyond marriage is a much bigger victory to be won: comprehensive federal civil rights legislation,” Marino-Thomas said at the Marriage Equality USA fundraiser. “LGBT Americans deserve the legal protections that are given to every other American. Now is the time to achieve full equality in all 50 states by adding four words – four simple, inclusive words – sexual orientation and gender identity, to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. And don’t be fooled – ENDA doesn’t do that. ENDA is not equal, and together we can pledge to make a better bill.”
