Which side of your mouth should we listen to HRC?
So President Obama will sign an executive order on Monday adding sexual orientation and gender identity to a 1965 executive order that barred discrimination by federal contractors. And the religious exemption will remain unchanged despite pleas from religious conservatives who wanted a sweeping religious exemption similar to the one in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). This is great.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) had to ruin it, of course, by calling on Congress to pass ENDA immediately. Two days ago, HRC sent a letter to Obama asking that there be no broad religious exemption in the executive order. So HRC doesn’t want a sweeping religious exemption in the executive order, but it does want one enshrined in federal law.
